What would be the best home base for touring Tuscany?

Similar question to the one I just posted as I want to spend about 3 nights in the Tuscany area. My main objective is to view the beautiful country and go on a few wine tours. Would like to stay somewhere that has a little nightlife...nothing too rowdy. Any suggestions for hotels around $200 or less per night?

I haven't overnighted in many towns in Tuscany, and not much of a nightlife person, but Siena might be ok for you. It's a little more cosmopolitan, there's a student population, people seem to hang out till late in bars (cafes) or in the main Piazza, and I'm sure there's a couple of nightclubs. You can also pick up tours from there into wine country, or drive.

Jill, the best location for "nightlife" in Tuscany is probably Florence, and that will also provide good choices for a variety of restaurants and Hotels. However, as suggested in the previous reply, Siena would be a great choice too as it's relatively close to some great spots - Montepulciano, Pienza, Montalcino, etc. I haven't checked, but you're probably also more likely to find great day tours to wineries or whatever from Siena. It would help to know what type of "nightlife" you're considering? The evening activities in Italy are a bit different than they are in this part of the world. It's difficult to make Hotel suggestions without knowing which town you'll be staying in. Also, are you set on staying in a Hotel, or would you consider a B&B? One excellent choice in Siena is * www.albergobernini.com/en/ * (cut & paste the link inside the asterisks). The breakfasts on the Terrace are great and it's within easy walking distance to the Bus Depot (which is the best method to arrive in Siena), Il Campo and other sights in the city. You'll probably get some good ideas for both locations and nightlife by having a look at the ITALY 2010 Guidebook. Cheers!
