Debating our Christmas plans. Usually we always go to Germany but my father died in January and I am not interested in going there this year. Italy..which towns/area would be ideal for such a week? Thank you
I am sorry about your father. I think Rome. So much to do here!
Another vote for Rome. I spent Christmas there decades ago and I still treasure my memories of that time.
I'm sure it's more difficult to do now, but I was able to go to midnight mass at St. Peter's Basilica. I will never forget how special that was, and I'm not Catholic.
I would say Rome as well. I would imagine there is more to do there. What a great way to spend Christmas! (Thank you for not using the X word)
If you plan on having dinner out somewhere I would start looking now - places are likely few and will up quickly.
Roma has the police-escorted motorcycle-Santa parade (not really a parade, but a couple hundred Santas, with elves in sidecars, runs through the city on December 24 (I think, could be the 25).
Rome, Florence, or Venice would be all excellent choices in my book.
Sorrento for a day or two before. Rome for Christmas Eve and after.
Napoli ! Napoli is legend at Christmastime, Spaccanapoli and other Mercatini streets start festivities in November and pick up in December. Chestnut harvest is late October and they roast daily on big grill pans outside all along the streets. Music, dance, and eats go late into the night!
Stores and outside stalls overflow like fruit baskets with homemade souvenirs, Christmas figurines and other decorations. The locals set up Natvity scenes in churches down the alley with make-shift poster signs pointing the way. I'm an English and Drama major and love the Intrigue of making my way to the Exhibit!
Besides Ocean views are Spectacular! Lodge in Chiaia or Piazza del Plebiscito areas. It's great Fun!
Thanks :) all great suggestions. I will ponder on it.
