What towns to see by taking train from Spello
Assisi. You really need a car in Spello to explore other towns. We were there for two weeks and never once saw a train coming or going from Spello’s station.
Assisi and Perugia are easy to reach by train from Spello. Assisi requires a bus ride up to the main town, and the Santa Maria degli Angeli church near the station is worth a visit.
Spoleto is another easy visit.
I will add that Assisi is much easier to reach by bus than train from Spello since Assisi’s train station is so far from town, as another poster alluded to. But Assisi is definitely the number one spot to visit.
We loved all the towns we visited in Umbria except for Spoleto.
We have visited Assisi from Spello by bus and vice versa. Spoleto by train is nice. Walk across the old Roman aquaduct. Very cool. Perugia also easy.
If you are wine drinkers, check out Gusto Tours for a one day trip into the countryside with Mark. Great way to see some of the land and learn about Umbria,
We visited Assisi, Spoleto, and Spello by train from Rome and had no difficulty! We usually use Rome as our home base and take daytrips from there. In fact, we are going back to Spello in the spring; it's our favorite town in Italy!
