What tourist sites are open in Rome on the May 1 holiday?

I am having problems finding things open on May 1. Does anyone know what sites are open on this holiday in Rome?

Hi Leslie. What sites, in particular, are you interested in? I did a quick look and it seems the Borghese Gallery, Colosseo, Foro Romano, Palazzo Massimo are all open, for example. I do not recall a lot of closures last year, but I suppose each museum/site will vary.

I looked at the Borghese Gallery for tickets and it did not allow for May 1 ? What site were you on Laurel? That would be perfect. I found nothing for the Colleseum for May 1. I would like to find the things the Roma Pass would cover for the holiday!

All sites are open, also the Gallery Borghese. Try to phone them at +39 068413979, or tell your hotel / B&B to help you to book.

You'll find schools, banks, government offices and post offices closed on May 1. Some sites will be closed including the colosseum (according to their official website) and the Vatican museums (also according to their official website). There will also be concerts in the evening so ask your hotel if they have any information about that.

If you can't book a ticket (Galleria Borghese, for example), they may be sold out.

I believe they may not be open on the 1rst. I know a lot of other sites are listing that they are closed so it wouldn't surprise me if the Borghese gallery is too. You could always call to check. 06 32810

I checked 060608.it, the Roma Capitale site which says the Colosseo is only closed Jan 1 and Dec 25. But the Archeoroma site says closure includes May 1. Tickitaly.com will not allow ticket sales so I guess that's rather definitive. On the other hand it looks like Ostia Antica is open. So is Galleria Doria Pamphilj, which is terrific.

Sorry if I got your hopes up, Lesley. Websites are not maintained as carefully here....

I checked the tourist site for Ostia Antica and it says its closed May 1. Thank you everyone for your help. It looks like we will just stroll on May 1 or maybe check out Orvieto for a few hours.

Hi again Leslie. It seems one can find a web site that says something is open for every site that says something is closed that day. You might do well to stay flexible and make some calls the day prior. Parco degli Acquedotti is impossible to close. You might enjoy a stroll there.

I was there a few years ago on May 1, and the workers at all the Imperial sites (Colliseum, Forum, etc) did a one day strike to get the day off. From what the guide said (I had a tour of those sites scheduled for that day), that type of thing is not unheard of.
What I found most challenging was that the subway and buses stopped service in the early afternoon (as scheduled, not a strike). I went to the Borghese that afternoon, and there were no taxis available when I got out. There were no cabs at any taxi stands and all those that passed by were taken. After walking for a very long time (my hotel was on the opposite side of the city), I came to a hotel and the bellman was able to get me a cab. So if you want to do anything far from your hotel, do it as early as possible in the day so the buses and subway are still running.
