What tour(s) would you do?

I’m racking my brain with what to do. Unfortunately I was not able to snag Colosseum tickets, really wanted attic or underground. I’m now looking at tour guides to do a visit but many are very pricey. I’m debating between spending good money for a good Colosseum tour (inclined to do underground) or doing a lower budget tour and adding a golf cart tour.

Total budget would be around 250 euros for 2 people.

We are in Rome for 3 days only Thursday 11/13 & leave morning Sunday 11/16. We’re both in relatively good shape, early 30s and are ok with walking everywhere.

The golf tour would be to give us a good lay of the land but the colosseum is on my bucket list.

What would be your guidance for first timers?

I did a tour that included the forum and colosseum, including underground. It was good enough but I didn’t feel that we really got enough information about the sites. I would have preferred less stopping time to take pics and more stories or history. Not sure what the golf cart tour entails, but if the colosseum is on your bucket list, I’d put the money into that tour.

You can get “the lay of the land” just by walking around on your own. Other than a few places ( Vatican,), a whole lot can be seen in walking distance if you’re ok with that. I’d also recommend the Domus Aurea tour if you have time and can make the schedule work. It’s near the colosseum and includes a well done VR view of the area before the colosseum was built. Search the forum for the official website to get tickets. No need to go to a third party for it.

Underground tickets are super hard to get and are quite pricey. I would recommend doing the Colosseum with a guide, since otherwise it's a bunch of rocks. For an awesome alternative of the underground, ( and cheaper) I would do the Colosseum Arena floor. This way you still get exclusive access and can still see the cool tunnels of the Underground ( from above).

If you do a tour of the arena floor, it usually includes a tour of the palatine hill and roman forum as well, so pretty comprehensive

Golf cart tours are cool as well, as long as you are ok with Rome traffic. The city is quite walkable, but golf cart tours are fun!

Rome is best seen on foot, it is very walkable and the historic center is compact
A golf cart tour isn’t going to get you very close to most sites-I would skip a golf cart tour for sure

Book one of the Colosseum tours with Walks of Italy or Through Eternity if you want a guide
A guide is most useful for the Forum, that area needs more explanation

Or use the Free RS audioguides and DIY
(Also use Rick’s Rome walks rather than golf cart)

Golf cart tours are useful in summer's brutal heat and for those with mobility issues. For the young and healthy in November, to me that's a waste of money. The historic center of Rome is very walkable and there are ruins everywhere. Since you want to see the Colosseum, book a basic tour with Walks of Italy that includes the Forum. Once you are inside the Colosseum, you'll realize you can see into the underground, and if you get onto the floor, that gives you a great view of everything. Have fun!
