I am attending Opera in Naples and don't really feel like carrying a suit to Europe for one event. Does anyone know what is appropriate for men on a week night at the Opera short of a suit?

Hi Jason,
You would be fine in just about about any opera house in Europe with a blazer and dark jeans or slacks. No tie necessary. Only for a dressy gala or Bayreuth would I suggest a full suit and tie.

My husband's been to the opera in Milan, Naples, Florence, and Verona, and says that people dress in a great variety of ways. He generally wears a sort of nice dark sweater and dark pants and dark shoes.

Standards of dress have deteriorated to the point that slacks, a long-sleeved shirt and sweater are perfectly fine.
