What to skip in Rome

I head to Rome in a couple of weeks. I've been 2x already, but really didn't spend time in the city. This time, I'm going with my daughter and she wants to see as much as possible.

My question is ---what is totally worth skipping so we have time to see the best sights? We will be in Rome for 6 nights, but plan a day trip to Florence, and a day trip to one hilltop town..so 4 full days for Rome.

What is a waste of time?

I think 4 full days of time gives you plenty of time to see everything major. Personally the only thing I wished I didn't spend the time on was the Palatine Hill. I think the Ruins of the Fori and Ostia Antica are much better. But I know lots of people like the Palatine Hill so I would feel badly telling you to skip it?

Ellen, do you have Rick Steve's Italy or Rome Book? He lists the sites and puts stars next to them indicating his opinion on what is a must see rather than do it only if there's time. Of course it's his opinion - but then, he's been every where. Just a thought.

Get advance reservations for the Borghese. Take a Contextrome Tour of Ancient Rome. Don't miss the Vatican and St Peter's. Don't miss the gelato!!! Stroll at night to the Piazzas.

We were in Rome for our 2nd visit recently and tried to cut costs by using the bus as our main transportation. We spent so much time trying to figure out which bus to take, when and where to catch it, and then ended up sometimes going the wrong direction and wasting even more time. We agree that if we go again we will splurge on a few taxi rides just to cut down on the stress. We never had this much trouble on the Metro or Tube!? Pick up one of those books they sell of the Forum in front of Colloseum that has the plastic overlays that show what the building looked like when it was first built. Pretty neat way to imagine history.
