We will be in Rome for a family gathering next summer. My wife loves the Cinque Terre and I think we will have three days there. I believe I may be able to squeeze a couple of days in Lucca. Here is my question, from previous posts my impression is that one day in Lucca might be enough to see the sights. WIth one other day, what might I visit using Lucca as my home base? I don't plan to rent a car, so it is either bus/train or working with a tour company. Any suggestions?
Pisa is very close by, and you could use Florence for a home base.
Hi Don, We are going to Lucca for a week next spring. I have been following this thread about things to do around Lucca on the Slow Travel/ Slow Talk board. You might find it useful: http://slowtalk.com/groupee/forums/a/tpc/f/862600685/m/259005145001
Hi Char,
Thank you for the link to slowtravel. I am wondering whether is there a way of exploring more of Tuscany for a day from where I am in Lucca? I have been to Florence before. What might the options be if I am not renting a car?
Forty minutes from Lucca by train is the medieval town of Pietrasanta, well worth a visit. http://www.welcometuscany.it/tuscany/lucca/pietrasanta%20medieval%20town%20around%20lucca.htm You can visit some sculptors' studios and maybe rent a bike for the 3 km ride to the coast and seaside resort of Marina de Pietrasanta. We wanted to do this when we were staying in Lucca for a few days, but ran out of time.
