What to see in Tuscany?

Hello Seasoned Travelers!

I will be visiting Italy in August with my wife and our son who is 5 years old. Our journey starts in France, but we will eventually make our way to Florence and Rome via Chamonix. We have never been to Mid/Southern Italy before.

We will be renting a car and driving from Aosta, Italy to Florence, and we were hoping to take as scenic of a drive there as possible, and possibly sleep somewhere in Tuscany before dropping the car off in Florence and continuing the rest of our trip by train. We saw Rick's guide on YouTube of Sienna, which looked amazing, but that's in between Florence and Rome, and probably doesn't make a lot of sense.

We were thinking of driving through Pisa to see the leaning tower as one idea. Another was to pass through Cremona and see the violin museum.

What would you guys recommend and where would you stay in between Milan and Florence for a trip like this?

Thanks!

John

Thinking about your 5-year-old, how about staying somewhere with a castle, such as stay in Parma and visit Torrechiara. There are lots of castles in this area, but we especially enjoyed all the painted rooms inside Torrechiara.

Or if you go the slightly longer route through Pisa, your child might like the Piaggio museum in Pontedera, a town a bit east of Pisa. You will enjoy it, too --- I sure did despite zero interest in vehicles.

Siena is wonderful, but Pisa is good to see The Leaning Tower. Lucca is great and nearby.

If going on to Rome, consider Orvieto.

What about Lucca? It is on the way to Florence, and close to Pisa. You could look at dropping the car in Pisa or Lucca even, and start your train trip earlier. Lucca is a nice size town with walls for bike riding walking that your 5 year old might enjoy.
