Try to borrow a book "Let's Go-Italy". It has a few things of these areas. Also, try Official websites
www.regione.basilicata.it, and, www.turismo.regione.calabria.it.
I got some clues by reading "Stolen Figs" by Mark Ravello. Our recently completed Festa Italiana featured Calabria and I think there are some interesting things. Notably, however, less tourists. There is more of a language barrier.

Also get a copy of the Lonely Planet guidebook. We left our "let's Go" book at home, and only took the LP book for our recent trip to Puglia. It was a good choice.
