we will have 2 carryon suitcases with us after departing cruise and plan on going to St. Marks Basilica and Doges Palace in the AM prior to train to Milan. Other than going to train station 1st and using left luggage, any options? Would St. Marks Basilica and Doges Palace bag checks accept small suitcases?

The bag check for St. Mark's should accept those and the bonus is you get a ticket that let's you go right to the front of the line to get into the basilica. You have to go into a decomissioned church that's just down a side alley from St. Mark's to find the bag check. I think it's a euro per bag, and it's only good for one hour. I don't know how strictly that hour is enforced, but I would imagine it's fairly flexible. They don't have the time to go through and check for bags that are about to "expire" as they're way too busy.
