What to do with 5/6 days from Rome?

Hello!

Thank you all in advance for any insight you can provide!

We will be staying in a home and touring around Tuscany for a week in early June with extended family. My son (13) and I would then like to stay on for a few extra days (up to a week) to do something else together before flying home.. Everyone else will be heading back to fly out of Rome, so that will be our starting point for the second part of the trip and we’ll need to come back there to fly out. We’ve been to Rome a few times so I’m looking for something else for us to do, without a car. So far, these are the options I’ve thought of - they are obviously all very different, but things I think we’d both enjoy.

  • take the train to Venice, spend 4-5 days there and visiting surrounding areas (too crowded?)
  • take the train to the Dolomites, do a 4-5 day self-guided inn-to-inn hike
  • go to a beach resort (no idea where would be best).

Any feedback or suggestions would be appreciated!

Thank you!

The one option I would give a thumbs down is a beach resort, for the following reasons.
1. If I spend the money for the airfare to Europe and endure the agonizingly long flight, I
don’t want to do something that can better be done in N. America, Hawaii, or the

Caribbean.
2. At that time of year the water is likely to be quite cold. (I do not like swimming in cold
water!)
There are some great choices available for day trips from each of your other possibilities.
It depends on your interests.

Venice area would be nice but crowded
Consider staying in Padua instead
Lots of day trips possibilities- Vicenza, Ferrara, Bologna, Verona, Bassano del Grappa and of course Venice as well

Beach without a car would likely not be worth it.
Both other options sound nice to me--yes Venice is crowded, but if not now, then when? And with that amount of time you can settle in and explore, plus day trips. Confirm seasonal aspects for Dolomites (I dunno).
Another nice option might be Bologna and envions.
