What to do the day we arrive in Rome?

After learning from our first RS tour years ago, we'll be arriving Sunday morning in Rome and our tour begins Mon. afternoon. We keep thinking of things we'd like to do, but either they're not an option on Sunday or they only have AM tour tickets, etc. and we'd prefer an afternoon...We have been to Rome before so we're looking for something new for us. We have plans to see the Sacro Bosco, also known as the Park of the Monsters on Monday before the tour begins.

We had hoped to visit the Capuchin crypt and others on Sunday, but we haven't found a tour time except the AM. We're a family of 5...parents and 3 "kids" in their 20s. On previous RT tours, we've toured the sewers of Paris and visited a French haunted house, Le Manor...and we found a theme park when on a RT tour of England.

Any suggestions? Have you ever been to the jazz club, Alexanderplatz? It's not far from the hotel!.....also I have found a few tiki bars in Rome! We enjoy tiki bars here in Atlanta and it might be fun to check out a Roman one. Thanks for any tips!

Consider booking a food tour with Eating Europe. I've done both the Trastevere and the Testaccio tours. You get fed and tour around neighborhoods that may be new to you.

Walk part of the Appian Way? Go to Ostia Antica? I'm dead to the world or arrival day and would never want to pre-pay for anything I hoped to do that day.

On my first day in Rome, I like to eat a giant plate of pasta (alla gricia/amatriciana/carbonara) and then walk over to Largo di Torre Argentina to visit the cats. ...This is probably why I travel alone!

Oh, that's a great idea! I've got the cat sanctuary (among other things) on the Lido penciled in for my September trip to Venice.

I second the Food tour, so much fun and you are outdoors walking around an area you probably would not have explored on your own.
