What to do on Xmas in Rome?

We will be arriving late afternoon (7pm) on 24 December from London. Staying @ Hotel Mascagni Via Vittorio E. Orlando Rome, thats close to National Roman Museum - Baths of Diocletian and Repubblica. My questions are: will any public transportation be running? What sites can we walk to if no transportation? and the big question, food?

There will be public transportation, but consider the ease of taking a taxi from the airport to your hotel as a starting point. Then you will find buses/Metro on holiday schedules but running, and you can walk to a LOT of places.

The 24th - 26th take some planning, but there's plenty to do. Make dinner reservations for the 24th! Many people don't even start dinner until 9:00 or 10:00PM. Closer to Christmas Katie Parla will update her annual dining list for the holidays, but many other restaurants are open, too. You can always take a nice walk to see the lights. The city is so decked out at Christmas! A very Roman thing to do is have a fish-based multi course feast on the 24th.

The 25th take a walk through the Ghetto where it is pretty much business as usual. Lots of people will be out and about . The ghetto is a great choice for dinner, too, but make a reservation because a lot of Italians dine out for Christmas! There are two precipi (nativity scene) museums open on Christmas Day. The 26th many sites are open as usual: Colosseo, Foro Romano, Borghese, various museums. Just check their websites to be sure. The point is, with planning, there is plenty to do even if some sites aren't open. Just walking (check out the book "24 Great Walks in Rome" for ideas ) is entertainment.

Laurel, I feel bit better knowing we will be able to eat on xmas eve and xmas day. LOL Because of the hotel location we should be able to hit Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, Piazza Navona and on foot. Looking forward to a lot of walking.
