What to do on Sunday in Florence?

We will be arriving on a Friday afternoon in early September and leaving Monday late morning. We have reservations at Galleria dell' Accademia and Uffizi for Saturday. I noticed many attractions are closed on Sunday and was wondering if someone could suggest something to do. This is our first time to Florence so we don't want to waste any time! Thanks!!

Some of my fondest memories of Florence are from just walking around. There are plenty of attractions open on Sunday (Bargello Museum, Boboli Gardens, Pitti Palace), but do take time to wander about and discover. I think that many folks make the mistake of spending all their time in this gorgeous city inside. There are some great views of the city that are easily reachable by foot and well worth the trouble.

True, much is open on Sundays in Firenze, but I would add that whether or not one is Catholic (or even Christian), attending a mass in an historic church is a wonderful experience. We did so on Christmas Day a few years back at San Lorenzo in Florence...wonderful music, the sounds of the beautiful language, the sincerity and passion of the people. I've read that Italians attend church less regularly now than ever before, and I suppose that's true, but a Sunday service is really a nice experience for a respectful visitor. Provides some quiet reflection time...

"I noticed many attractions are closed on Sunday." Good news: there is plenty for you to see and do on Sundays in Florence. If you check online you'll probably be surprised how many sights are not closed on Sundays. Some have shorter hours on Sundays, closing earlier or maybe closed in the morning but open in the afternoon. For detailed info, check Rick's Florence 2010 book or check websites.

Thanks for the ideas; they will be helpful. I am actually going thru Rick Steve's Florence book at this moment, so will note what is open. We definitely will take in all that Florence has to offer-whether it is indoors or out. Thanks again!

Cindy, re your: "I am actually going thru Rick Steve's Florence book at this moment, so will note what is open." Look in the Orientation chapter, under Daily Reminders, the daily closures are given. Double check the Bargello: someone said it's open Sundays but it used to be closed every other Sunday (I don't know the current schedule).
