This will be our first visit to what I have seen described as the most romantic place in Italy . What are your suggestions for great restaurants and the do-not-miss sights in this village?
BD, this is in no way being critical of Portovenere , because we love love love Portovenere, but you could probably cover every square inch of the place in an afternoon or morning. It is a small charming fishing village.
There are a couple of churches, castle, a dockside area facing poets bay.
There are a few restaurants. Most are good, but we haven't eaten at them all. If you have not gotten lodging yet, we have always stayed at Hotel Genio in the historic center. The folks are very nice. Lot of stairs though as it's built into and on the city walls sort of.
Have fun. Here is link with some info.

Oh, and if you are hikers there are trails that link Portovenere to Riomaggiore.

Last July we took a boat to Portovenere as a daytrip from Vernazza. Portovenere is a charming village with a castle and a church built high up overlooking the water. We only spent an afternoon here so can't comment on accommodations or places to eat but we did enjoy the time we spent here and the boat ride was beautiful.
