What to do in or near the cruise port of Genoa?

Genoa is a one day stop on our Disney cruise. I'm not sure if Milan is something we want to spend our entire day on. Would love to see the Duomo and The Last Supper, but that's about it. Any suggestions for a half day tour of Milan or other must sees near that port to explore? What about taking the train from Genoa. How easy is that?

Where will you stop before or after Genoa ?

My first thought would be to train to the Cinque Terre region of Monterosso or Vernazza. Or to Camogli.

Before Genoa we will be in Villefranche Sur Mer and after in Livorno. I have the Rick Steves Mediterranean Cruise Port Book, but Genoa is not included. What are my other options? I am looking at Cinque Terre and Camogli but don't know how to navigate there or if they are a better option than seeing the city of Milan. Tickets are already gone for the Last Supper, and that was what I mainly wanted to see in Milan.

I'm all for exploring where you are instead of traveling half your day to and from. Milan is 1:37 each way on the fastest connection, or longer on other connections. Do you want to spend 4 hours out of a one-day stop sitting on a train?

I would consider time in Genoa itself, and a regional-train wander along the Ligurian coast, not Cinque Terre just due to congestion. Genoa gets mixed reviews here but certainly has some interesting sights. Assuming you're traveling with kids, the aquarium is one of the world's best. (I haven't been, but it's on my list.) And Genoa had some very wealthy merchants for centuries, so the old town has some good wandering.

Or, if you're tired of water, rent a car and head inland to Piedmont, pick any small town in the nearby hills and wine country to explore a bit and have a good meal. We have done a one-day wander by car through Cherasco, Barbaresco, Barolo and Neive and had a really great day. Without knowing the ages of your kids, it's hard to know if that would be fun for them but my then-teenagers enjoyed it.

We visited Genoa on our 1st trip to Italy and didn't have much time there, but we visited the aquarium and quite enjoyed it.

If you'd rather get out of the city, take a 33 minute train ride to Ravello, then a 10 minute taxi to Portofino. Two cute towns to visit.

You're right Nicole, glad you caught that. Rapello is very close. Ravello is in Tuscany.

Are you thinking Ravenna? Ravello is on the Amalfi Coast...unless there is more than one. ;)
