Hi, I am returning to San Francisco from Rome (after Rick Steves' tour ) via London (Heathrow Airport). I'll be arriving HLR at 2:30 PM , but won't depart until next day (10AM). I've never been to London. Would like to know what I can do to have a quick look at this city. Short tour? Bus ride? Many thanks.
Wow, that was quick! Thank you, Ken. One more question: I am going to rent a sleep cabin at the airport (Yotel), from 10PM to 5A (the next day). From 3PM to 10PM I want to rent a locker to stow away my one luggage. What is your advise?
If you want to "see" London, I suggest taking the hop on, hop off bus. It drives around all the major sights--not necessarily walking distance--and you can get off and on where you wish.
Check the hours first. You arrive at LHR at 2:30. By the time you clear immigration and customs...you'll be heading into London fairly late into the AFternoon. Many places may be closed.
Also check with the Yotel to see if they will let you leave your bags since you'll be checking in later that day.
I don't believe yotel will let you leave your bags (I think I read that on their site ... I'm trying the one at Gatwick this spring), but there are left luggage counters at Heathrow where you can check your bag.
As far as what to do, you might also check the London Walks schedule to see if there is an evening pub walk that appeals to you. It is a great way to see a portion of the city. Their site is www.walks.com.
