What to do for a few days outside of Venice

I will be in Venice for a few days in late July prior to beginning a tour . I would love all of your most innovative suggestions of some things I could do for a few or several days in a region outside of Venice. I have already been to Verona, Cortina D’Ampezzo, Bologna.

I was thinking perhaps of hiking in a region of the Dolomites closer to Austria,

Suggestions?

Go to the Dolomites! We loved our time there, hiking every day. We stayed in Ortisei and it was a perfect hub.

Trieste is a beautiful seaside city with stunning beaches. Also known as “Vienna by the Sea” from the days when it was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Trieste would be the perfect place to beat the heat of July.
Trieste is just a two-hour bus ride from the Venice Mestre train/bus station.

Padua is a medieval city with tons of historic architecture. Padua is also a bustling university town with Italy’s oldest university. Padua is only a 30 to 45-minute train ride from Venice.

What are your dates?
I am not familiar with Ortisei but see several listings on booking.com with free cancellation- late July dates

Some hotels may not even have their 2026 calendar up yet.
