What to do during an 8 hour layover at Malpensa Airport?

The airline changed our flight times so we now have an almost 8 hour layover in Milan (1 pm until almost 9 pm) before our flight to Palermo.

I'm looking for suggestions that allow us to get out and walk a bit after our flight from San Francisco--perhaps in one of the small town nearby.

Any help regarding possible transportation options is appreciated too!

Thank you,

Kathy

Take a 42 minutes train from your Terminal to Milano Cadorna station, walk from Cadorna to Milano Centrale station passing by the Duomo (aka Milan Cathedral) and the Galleria next to it. When you are at Milano Centrale take a 56 minutes train back to Malpensa.

You could check out the Milan Cathedral, largest Gothic cathedral in the world.

Or rent a car and drive to nearby Lake Maggiore, East side, charming town of Ranco. Perhaps there is public transportation , we drove. Take a ferry ride, have dinner in Ranco at Michelin Star Il Sole di Ranco.

The airline cannot provide a routing/schedule that has a more reasonable layover time?
