What to do after the tour?

We are taking the Rick Steves tour of Venice, Florence and ending in Rome-- June. We are planning on staying 3 nights post trip. Should we stay in Rome to see more or travel to anything nearby? Flight reservations are not made yet to fly back to the Wash. DC area. Looking for some outdoor things to do. Any advice?

You might add a night or more to Rome and/or visit Assisi or Orvieto.

Hi Kathleen. When you say "outdoor things to do" do you mean beach, hiking, scenic drives, winery tours? Can I assume the R.S. tour will show you the highlights of Rome and you want to do something completely different? Umbria is more rural and a complete change of pace.

Zoe's idea to go to Assisi is a good one for that. You could base there, see Assisi, but also visit nearby Spello, Spoleto and other small towns. We've done the area completely on public transportation but a car is an option if you want those scenic drives, and Umbria is lovely for hiking.

As to beaches, there are some not far from Rome, but we are not really beach people so I am not one to advise....

The Amalfi coast offers endless opportunities for hiking and would be an amazing cherry on the top of that tour!

Thanks for the advice...we love to hike and see the gardens, so those will be good choices to look into! Thanks!
