We have been walking the city for three days now. Lots of retail options. We were in Trastevere tonight - tons of street vendors selling silver and turquoise. I haven't heard that Rome was known for their silver jewelry. Am I wrong? We look for silver in southwest US. (And turquoise). But I'm open to looking at it if it is a "Rome thing". Fought with the 20 year old on this...personally I have very little desire to shop. Too busy just strolling through the neighborhoods.
Having been to Rome several times, I can't think of something definitively Roman. We have bought some things from shops we had not seen elsewhere, but those tended to be more middle eastern than Roman. Of the Roman things we did buy, it would include different excellent pastas, some Peccorino Romano and other cheeses, Olive Oil, Wine, and other food items. One time we did find a shop that sold garden items and clay replicas of reliefs and items off of buildings, we thought we wrote down the address but the next time could not locate the shop.
That said, just strolling the neighborhoods suits me as well.
Just enjoy your trip. When you get home, go here:

Can't think of anything that screams "Rome" unless of course you are Catholic and desire a rosary from the Vatican gift shop. My best friend requested a rosary (and not from the cheap souvenir carts around the area) so I went to the Vatican gift shop and purchased a unique piece. The gift shop was mobbed and I couldn't wait to leave but it meant a lot to my friend that I got it from the Vatican itself.
Thank you everyone.
There is a shop near the Pantheon that makes hand crafted leather wallets and handbags that are very nice.
