Not Urbino, but we did visit and enjoy Spello (Stayed there), Assisi, and Spoleto in Umbria, as well as Montalcino (stayed there), Pienza (lovely), Montepulciano, Volterra and Siena (stayed there). I would not stay in Siena again, I would chose an agriturismo instead. I would repeat Spello and Montalcino in an instant.

Urbino is not in Tuscany, but in Le Marche. I only point that out because, depending on where you're coming from, it could be a big detour. On the other hand, it's an interesting town, very much worth a visit. If you go, be sure to visit the Palazzo Ducale. Pienza is a very pretty, small town, definitely worth a stop. You can get a guided tour of the pope's palace there.

Loved Pienza. Every inch is a Kodak moment. We also LOVED Assissi. Followed by Montepulciano, San Gimignano and Montalcino. Did not like Siena. Thought Orvieto and Cortona were just ok.

Haven't been to Urbino, but visited Pienza and it was pleasant, but not spectacular. We seem unique in this opinion, though, so I would recommend a stop. Spello (best view anywhere in Europe for a dinner!), Assisi (favorite Italian Hill town), Montepulciano (great steak restaurant if you're into that) are all worth it. Montalcino is if you're into wine (brunello specifically), but the town isn't much, really. Volterra is a great visit, as is San Gimignano early or late (avoid the tour busses!). Most every Italian Hill town has something to offer, but if just depends on what you're looking for, so I say try anyone that you think might interest you. Odds are you'll like it.

I second (or is it third) the towns of Spello, Assisi, and Montepulciano. I also concur that Cortona is not worth a visit, and Siena would be low on the list. I agree that Montelcino is only worth a visit if you like red wine and do the suggested RS Brunello wine tasting, which we really enjoyed. No one has mentioned Montefalco, which has wonderful Sagrantino (better than the Brunello at less than half the price) and a fabulous restaurant in the square - L'Artistite, where we also went for tastings) We were shocked how much we enjoyed San Gimingango too, but RS's commentary is perfect, and we were there when only a few tour buses were. Cheers!

Mike, in no particular order we have enjoyed Spello, Pienza, Montalcino, Montepulciano and San Gimignano. Every other Italian village we have visited has its own special charm, some more than others.

I want to thank all who replied,we have been to all of the popular hill towns and other towns in Tuscany and Umbria and the only negative place was Pisa because of the tacky vendors running around at the field of miracles selling junk
