We are cruising with Viking and ending in Venice. I want to visit my grandparents home town of Buti near Lucca. I am finding that driving can be difficult at best. What are suggestions? Should I cancel my car and take the train. We then need to go from Buti to Rome. There are 4 of us. Thanks for the recomendations.
If you don't want to drive at all;
You could take the train to Lucca

and then a bus to Buti

Buti to Rome you would have to go back on the bus to Lucca to get the train to Rome

I don't see that driving to Buti would be difficult, but it's pretty far @ 186 miles. Most would take the train over to Pisa and possibly rent a car to run the 10-15 miles east to Buti.
I would rent a car, drop it off in or near Rome.
hey wbuti
are you planning to do this in one day, overnight in lucca, pisa or buti, then onto rome? you can check rome2rio.com, place your towns and gives you options of travel which can give you some ideas and help you decide. then check your travel departures and arrivals so you aren't pushing luggage around town or early checkin. how long will you be in venice after cruise and rome? is that where your flight back to "home" is? what month are you visiting?
also if you are coming from USA/Canada, get your IDP (international driving permit) from AAA/CAA for about $20/2 passport photos, pickup same day. all who are going to drive car will need one. enjoy
