What section of Rome?

What area of Rome would be best for access to the major attractions? We are in process of finding apartments to rent for a few days in October. Since we have not been to Rome before, we would like to stay in an area that would make it easier to get to many attractions.

I have stayed in the Centro Storico between Campo de Fiore and Largo Argentina at the Hotel Smeraldo. The location was ideal for just about every major site in Rome. We could easily walk to Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, Pantheon, Colosseum, Piaza Navona, etc. It was a bit of a hike to teh Vatican and Villa Borghese but we just took a taxi to those places. If you want an apartment, you can find plenty in that area on VRBO, Homeaway, etc. I have an apartment booked for May in Trastavere and am really looking forward to this experience.

We were very happy staying on Via Delle Coppelle in the Pantheon neighborhood. (It was the Baldassini bed and breakfast, not an apartment.) We walked to Colosseum and Forum, Borghese Gallery, Spanish Steps, Vatican and, of course, the Pantheon just a couple twists and turns away. And the area itself is very pedestrian-friendly, with that old Roman village vibe. If you can find an apartment in that area, I think you'd be very pleased.

I stayed in an apartment between Campo de Fiore and Largo Argentina and the Pantheon. It was a wonderful location and Largo Argentina is a major transportation hub. We walked most every where except the Vatican. There were also great restaurants in the area. Don't stay right on Campo de Fiore due to the noise but a block or two away will be great..
