My friend and I are going to be near Olivone Switzerland and need to get to Rome on Aug 9, 2014. We want to go straight there as we'll be in Northern Italy previous to that. (I know not the best itinerary but there were some dates we needed to work around and plane availability dictated some choices). I've debated about trains from Milan? (maybe a night train?) or just catch a plane from Zurich or Milan Milan appears much less expensive). Any suggestions about the most economical way to get to Rome?
You can get the PostBus from Olivone around 6 am, gets to Biasca at 6:50 change to the Regional Express train at 6:56 to Milano Centrale at 8:50, change to Freccia fast train to Rome Tiburtina at 9:15 arriving 12:24.
I don't think flying will get there any quicker as Olivone is rather remote. The current fare to Milano Centrale is 31 chf. You should be able to pick up the Milan-Rome leg supereconomy at 39 euro well in advance.
Interestingly, I was noticing that the post bus makes 26 stops between Olivone and Biasca during its 44-minute run. From Olivone to Milan, it takes 2hrs44min. on the bus/train. Once on the Freccia fast train, it's 3hrs. from Milano-Centrale to Roma-Termini. No night train. For the flying choice, by the time you got to Zurich Flughafen (airport), went through security, boarded a plane, flew to Rome and took the Leonardo Express into Rome-Termini, you most likely would have arrived slightly earlier on the train. Discounted tickets at 39Euro for the Milan/Rome train ride. You can buy these tickets online up to 119 days out from the time of travel on www.trenitalia.com.
