I´ve read it can be done by ferry. Where exactly does the ferry dismbark at? Any extra customs procedures to get into Greece? Also, can anyone provide an estimate travel time?
For links to ferries offering service from Italy to Greece go here: http://www.traghettionline.com/grecia.htm
We took the ferry from Ancona to Patras - it was about 22 hours. Ferries also leave from Bari and Brindisi, Italy, which is a few hours shorter. It depends on the ferry line you choose, but you can disembark in Corfu or Patras which is in the Pelopennesse. You can then catch a train to several other places in Greece very easily. The train station is just a short walk from the port in Patras.
Appreciate your feedback people! I just know I have to see Greece!
I would also look into flying. There are a number of budget airlines connecting Greece and Italy. Figure if you will be in Rome prior to Greece, Train to Bari (Several Hours) Evening departure on ferry, train from Patras to Athens...You will chew up most of a day, a night, and then the next morning getting to Athens. By plane, half or most of a day. The ferries are good, but if you plan on sleep, you need to upgrade to a Dorm or Cabin.
You may look into flying. Go to skyscanner.net which is a site for budget european airlines. (It works like expediate and other travel search sites) I flew from Athens to Venice in June for $138 on alpieair (Italian Airline). If I recall correctly, its about a 2 hour flight. It is probably much quicker than a ferry, but I have not done a cost comparison. Happy Travels.
Found a flight for $78 USD! Any objections? No? Flight wins!
