I'd like some suggestions on whether to stay in Rome or in Civitavecchia. I'll have at least one day in Rome before I begin a cruise, then returning and spending another day then flying out from FCO. I am wondering if I should stay near the port the first day and find public transportation to visit Rome. Then spend the second night in Rome and tour again. Is Rome easily accessible by train from Civitavecchia to avoid the expensive shuttles from Rome to the port?
Hi Sammee - My suggestion would be to spend all available time prior to your cruise in Rome. The Hotel Forte, located at The Spanish Steps is an excellent choice because it is so close to everything. Walk to the Trevi Fountain, Via Veneto, The Roman Forum and enjoy the wonderful cafes just off The Steps on the side streets. On the Via Veneto you can also pick up an open air bus to tour the city , getting off and back on as often as you like.
The train station is 5 minutes from The Steps by cab and an easy ride out to Civitavecchia and your ship. Cost is only a few euros vs. a lot for a cab ride to the port.
Emanuel and Emanuella are great hosts and you will have more time to see Rome!!
Ciao, Greg
