What's least expensive way from Marco Polo airport into Venice?

Flying into Venice and am not sure what is the least expensive way to get over to Venice. Motor boats via the airport are 98 Euros for up to 4 people; tour companies offer a hostess and motor boat for about 140 Euros. Anyone have advice on the best way to go????

The search function leaves a bit to be desired...

Anyway, there are two basic ways to get from Marco Polo Airport to Venice. Land or water.

Via land there are three methods:

  1. Take the blue ATVO bus to Piazzole Roma. Cost is still I believe 3 euros per person. Express shuttle bus that looks like an over the road bus. Passenger compartment up high over luggage storage. About 20 minutes.

  2. Take the orange ACTV bus to P. le Roma. I think the cost is 2 euros. It is a local bus so more stops and about 30 minutes. This is a local bus configuration, take your luggge on with you stow overhead or in seat. This bus is also covered by the ACTV passes for the vaporettos.

  3. Take a taxi. Don't know the cost. Sorry

By water there are two choices.

  1. Alilaguna. A larger boat like a water bus but a bit sleeker than the canal boats. Costs 12 euros one way. It will take you and luggage to stops close to San Marco. Makes some stops on Murano and the Lido. About an hour.

  2. Water taxi. this is a sleek usually mahoghany motor launch. Very cool and very pricy. Usually around 100 euros for up to 8 people and luggage. Depending on where you are staying they can get you very close by going on side canals. Takes about 20 -30 minutes.

Once you hit P. le Roma by land, you may have to take a vaporetto to your hotel or apartment.

If you are a large party say 5 or more with extra luggage (not recommended) the water taxi may be only a bit more expensive. But a lot easier to manage.

Ron has provided great information on the two bus systems that have frequent service from Marco Polo airport to the Piazzale Roma. The rides are 20-30 minutes. The Alilaguna has limited stops in Venice and takes up to 90 minutes. You can see the schedule at www.alilaguna.it. The water taxi is really expensive but sometimes not tooo bad if you have a large group with lots of luggage.

If you know the name and address of your hotel, we can tell you which vaporetto to take to get there. The Piazzale Roma is a major vaporetto stop. Just make sure that you have a valid ticket before stepping onto the vaporetto. They don't check for tickets so its easy to just hop on. But, they do come through every now and then and check. I read a report that about 4% don't have tickets. Its a 50Euro fine on the spot.

You can go to www.veniceconnected.com to buy vaporetto and museum tickets in advance at a discount.

The options are clearly laid out on the EuropeForVisitors.com website. Click here for the options from the airport.

Yes, Steven, that's the site I came up with when I googled marco polo airport and everything you need to know is there, but Janice didn't want to hear about it, apparently. She got a mite snippy with me.

The cheapest way, of course, would be to swim...but seeing that swimming would be somewhat impractical, the public vaporetto, while taking an hour or so, is the least expensive DRY option. (:

PS: Larry's right: Alilaguna is not public, but the cheapest way.

The public vaporetto (ACTV) doesn't go to the airport. The Alilaguna does but I believe that its a private system.

Although the Alilaguna is the cheapest, its certainly not quick. Took us over an hour to get from the airport to St. Mark's Square. Good thing we were not in rush but the jet lag made it worse going so slow.

Wow! I am truly blown away at the people on this site.............either they are genuinely helpful or they have nothing better to do than bitch!

To those of you who were sincere in helping I greatly thank you! We are quite excited about our trip and have spent as much time as we can in planning it to ensure we make the most of it.

To those who think I was being "rude" I apologize!
I feel fortunate to be able to take this trip and want to see and do all that I can therefore saving money whenever possible is a must! Getting from the airport to my hotel is not my idea of funds well spent...........and I realize that going by water is the very best way to arrive in Venice(and the way we will go) it is just that when looking for rates they are quite different depending on where you are looking.
