What's Iceland like in early May?

We're planning a trip in early May to Europe and would like to use Icelandair so we can stop for a few days to explore the area around Reykjavik before continuing on to Frankfurt. From FRA, we'd like to go to Milan. Icelandic doesn't go into Milan until the end of May, so we'll need to train or another airline to get there.
Can anyone answer my question about weather in Iceland, or suggest a good way to get to Milan from Frankfurt?

I stopped overnight in Reykjavik five years ago and head there again this May. Expect cool (40-50) rainy weather. The early dawn around 3-4 am makes the light rosy and otherworldly. Sorry I can't help with Milan.
