I’m thinking of finishing our upcoming trip in Vicenza (we fly out of Milan) and see that accommodation prices are huge on the Sept 8 but plunge by the Monday Sept 9. Wondering if there is a big event going on. I see there is a jewelry show that weekend. Could that be the reason for the price difference ?
I'm thinking that Vicenzaoro (the jewelry trade show) is what you're up against. The website states that it's "The largest show in Europe dedicated to goldsmithing and jewellery."

VO’Clock Privé, an event concentrating specifically on watchmaking, ends on the 8th (dates are 6-8). The 9th is a Monday when some attendees maybe heading home before Vicenzaoro ends on the 10th, Put it together and that may explain high price over the weekend, falling on Monday the 9th?
LOL, Taylor Swift will not be nearby so not her fault. I checked! :O)
Try Verona and see if you have any better luck. I think their opera season will have just ended so maybe you'll catch a break on lodging. It is a charming, chic and very walkable city with an intact Roman arena and a cafe culture vibe.
You can take a quick train to Vicenza from Verona (30-40 min) if there were things you specifically really wanted to see/do there. Padua and Brescia are also easy day trips depending on how much tourism versus relaxing you're interested in doing.
Good luck,
