What Non-Tourist Beach To Go To In Italy

Hi All!
I am taking my family on a two week beach vacation in Italy September 2021. What non-tourist beach/town would you suggest to go to that might be centrally located so we could take day/overnight trips to other cities.

Thank you in advance for your input!

I think that by definition, most beaches are geared toward tourists since most beachgoers don't reside too close to the beaches and have to travel to get there.

If you mean which beaches don't cater to international tourists, then I think you should look to areas that really aren't close to tourist meccas, including anything on the Amalfi coast or in a well known area. Italians head to the beach in August, so you should be pretty much okay on dates, but we found Ischia, in the Bay of Naples, to be uncrowded in the second week of September, with great sandy beaches and wonderful spas and hot springs.

Italian beaches are a little different. While there are areas where you can lay out a towel and catch rays, most of the decent sites have umbrellas and chaise lounges to rent, and of course are served by restaurants/cafes. Some beaches are completely booked, but in September you shouldn't have any problems. Positano, Amalfi, Sorrento, and other "resort" areas have very small and rocky beaches. Find an area you want to explore and maybe some of us can provide more detailed recommendations.

You might want to check out San Remo (Sanremo) Italy. There are many beaches there. I am just not sure how crowded they get during September.

Decide what cities you'd like to travel to first. For Lucca, Pisa, Cinque Terre, and Florence consider Viareggio which has good transportation options and lots of beach. Bear in mind that you will not find sandy dunes and isolated beaches in Italy that also have access to cities. Look at this thread for a bit of Viareggio discussion: https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/italy/viareggio-rentals

September is already low season at all beach locations, therefore crowds should not be an issue.
There isn’t a centrally located beach town from which you can visit the rest of Italy. However some beach towns are close to famous tourist destinations. Therefore first decide which destinations you would like to visit, then we can suggest some beach localities nearby that you can use as a base to visit some of those destinations.

My favorite beach to go to in Italy is in the Maremma area, the best being just north of Orbetello. Rome is about 2 hours south, Pisa two hours north, Siena is an hour by car and Florence is a bit further. There are also a great deal of smaller towns to enjoy, like Talamone or Pitigliano and the Saturnia hotsprings are always a hit. The white wine is fantastic. We go every year, it's pretty much all Italian tourists from Milan/Florence and they come in August, July and September are both pretty relaxed.
Good luck planning,
Katy

I worry that seasonal businesses may have begun to close down by then. I doubt Italy has many beaches superior to the Caribbean or the east and west coasts of the USA. One way to avoid tourists might be an inland but non-chic lake beach, for example Lago Trasimento. (Castiglione del Lago.) But check seasonal closing dates.
