What is Venice like in March?

I'm thinking of spending some time in Venice, but am undecided whether to go in March or in April. Does anyone have experience staying in Venice for more than a few days during that time of year? I have been to Italy twice before, the first time over a decade ago and to Rome two years ago, for 20 days.

I was there for six days mid-March this year and felt like I’d lucked out. It here were people, but it did not feel particularly crowded. The weekend days were certainly busier.

Light layer for the daytime, maybe an added jacket in the evening. I think there was one afternoon of drizzle.

What do you want to know? You can Google the historic weather for that month, but it should be cool. Of course the days are shorter in March, and tourist sites may still be closing earlier. It's still off season, verging on shoulder season, and crowds will be lower in March than April. Easter falls at the end of March next year. We were there in mid March for several days a few years ago and quite enjoyed the lack of crowds. IIRC, we only had one day of light rain, but of course YMMV.

March is likely cooler and days shorter, also because Europe switches to daylight savings on the last Sunday of March.

We were there April 2nd to 7th this year, just after time change and before Easter. Weather was perfect (for us), early mornings and evenings required a light jacket or sweater, but we (luckily) had no rain. My wife wished she had brought gloves, but she gets cold easier than I. A few school groups on holiday, but otherwise modest crowds.

There is a cruise ship crowd site (I forget its name) that you plug in dates to confirm how many ships / passengers are in town to work around those dates. That time of year I think it’s just weekends. We timed it to arrive on a Sunday evening and left on Friday. Perfect!

I would avoid the week before and after Easter, and that holiday falls the end of March in 2024. Safe travels!

We did a week in Venice in March and it was amazing. We had visited Venice several times prior on day trips but staying on the island changed our entire experience for the better. The weather was pleasant the entire week. We wore light jackets in the early/late hours but didn't need one most of the mid-day hours. The crowds were manageable and we had no problem getting into sites or restaurants.

This is really useful to factor to, as Easter falls at the end of the month. I'd want to be out of Venice way in advance of a tidal wave of tourists on holiday.

It's very useful as well to get people's personal accounts of spending time in Venice in March, as opposed to simply looking up average temperatures and rainfall. I wonder if being by the lagoon makes it humid (but not New Orleans humid, of course) and/or has a chill factor. Wind from the Adriatic Sea?

We went in mid March pre-pandemic when Easter was a month later. Absolutely perfect cool temps with no mobs of tourists.

I did one my first RS tours, Venice, Florence and Rome, and it started February 15. We had a little drizzle a few times and you needed a lightweight raincoat with another layer underneath. But it was wonderful for the lack of crowds and never a sniff of a cruise ship, I always travel as off season as possible. Venice is truly magical. I got some great pictures with sunshine on the canals.
