I will be arriving at Malpensa at 1:30 pm from another European city. From there, I would like to catch a train to Monterosso. The earliest train is at 2:43pm to Milan to catch the Intercity at 4:05 pm. Will I get through all the customs, baggage, etc or should I just get the later train. The next one is 4:43 with a much later arrival in Monterosso (which we would prefer not to do).
Any thoughts?

The station is smallish. Not sure what you mean by "surrounding area" but Monterosso is not all that large and there sure aren't any "areas" there to worry about: it's too expensive to stay there to be any of THAT! There are two separate areas - old town and new - and the station is closest to the new section.

There's a shuttle in Monterosso? It's a tiny train station, and when you exit you are 100 feet from the ocean at sea level. Have you mapped out how far of a walk it is to your lodgings?

I just did Andrew. It should be fine. Not too far. Pack lighter best option.

Flying into Milan from another Schengen country, you would not have customs/passport control to deal with. If you have checked luggage, its just a matter of the flight being on time and how long it takes for the luggage to appear that will affect how fast you will be able to exit the airport to catch the train.
