I will be traveling to Siena from Rome on 02October. What is the most convenient way to get there? We are not planning to rent a car while in Italy, but I noticed that there is no direct train - we would have to connect in Florence and then backtrack our way to Siena, which google maps says will take about 4 hours. Is there a better way? Maybe a public bus?
There is a direct bus that takes just shy of 3 hrs. Check schedules at Sena.it
Thanks Nancy! Is it normally suggested to book this bus in advance? Or would it be ok to remain flexible and purchase my ticket at the bus station?
If not trains, then buses. This is the portal with the various choices:

But the most frequent buses are with Sena:

Goeuro doesn't list it, but Megabus(.com) is another option - this company works pretty much like Flixbus, in that if you book your tickets early, the cheaper they will be.
There are no direct trains, but FYI, travel time on some departures is under 3.5 hours and some connect at Chiusi rather than Florence; these are cheaper because they're InterCity trains and travel less distance.
