What is the easiest route? Palermo

Hi all,

Staying in Palermo and would like to know what the easiest route would be here. I have a few nights to use so if i had 2 nights per place how would you do it?

Palermo --> Syracuse --> Toarmina ---> Catania as i fly out there.
OR
Palermo --> Toarmina ---Catania as base and do a day trip to Syracuse?
Or
Palermo --> Toarmina ---> Syracuse --> Catania

There is so much to see in Palermo and even Siracusa/Ortigia. Personally, I'd skip Taormina, do 4 nights in Palermo, 3 in Ortigia and 1, 2 if you can add a day in Catania.

How long will you be in Palermo before moving on? What will your mode of transportation be? And, are you departing from Catania?

Given those options, would suggest 3-4 nights Palermo, 2 nights in Taormina to see the gorgeous amphitheater plus a daytrip to wineries (Emilio Sciacca) around the base of Mt. Etna. If you can work it in, stop in Agrigento to see the Valley of the Temples at dusk. It is awesome! Have a great trip.

I also plan on using trains / busses.

Would you suggest any of the ideas I had night wise or change anything ?

I dug Palermo, but I’d cap Palermo at 4 nights. That’s assuming you’re including a trip up to Monreale because that will make a good chunk of a day. I would also stay in Ortigia (Siracusa) over Catania and give it at least two nights. Even though you’re flying out of Catania, there’s regular bus service from Sircsusa and Taormina to the airport so do t feel compelled to stay in Catania. I’d even say booking a private airport transfer would be worth it if necessary.

Bus is the best way to connect these cities. I used the Rome2Rio app to at least get a sense of schedules and routes. It’s been a few years, so hopefully the websites for these busses has caught up to 2025.

Palermo: 3 or 4 nights
Syracuse 2 or 3 nights
Taormina 2 nights max (or nearby Giardini Naxos for lower prices and a beach)
Catania 0 nights, or at most 1 night before the flight if the flight is in the early AM.

Is it easier going Palermo to Taormina or Palermo to Syracuse .. then Syracuse to taormina?
