There is a website called viamichelin which works like mapquest. You can get distances (in kilometers), approximate driving times, and specific directions for driving. Don't know about trains, but I'm sure one of our fellow posters does.

For trains, try Trenitalia.com, using approximately the day of the week and time you will be travelling. Train times will vary depending on timing of transfers and route, from Balzano you could do Verona/Milan/Genoa/Vernazza or you could go South via Verona/(Parma or Pisa)/La Spezia. Both routes would be 6-8 hours
