What is the Closeset airport near Crotone in Calabria

I know Lamezia Airport is in the south of Italy and I'll be flying from Rome and trying to get to Crotone. What is the closest airport to that town? I'm undecided if I should take a train from Rome or fly. Thanks

I believe it is Lamezia Terme. 50 miles as the crow flies, but 2 hours by train.

There is an airport in Crotone but flights are very limited (mostly Ryanair) and none from Rome.
Lamezia is your best bet

Alice,

Crotone does have a small airport, but it has very limited and mostly seasonal domestic flights from Bergamo and Bologna (among others). The larger Lamezia-Terme International Airport has a much broader range of flights. The only airline with service from Rome appears to be Alitalia.

Your options would appear to be.....

  • train from FCO Roma Termini and from there to Crotone. Total travel time will be at least eight hours, and the trip will require several changes. After a long international flight, that's not an attractive choice.

  • Flight from FCO to Lamezia-Terme and then train to Crotone. The flight is only about 1H:15M and since you're at the airport anyway, that seems like a much easier option. From Lamezia-Terme airport to Crotone the trip is as short as 1H:59M, depending on which trains you manage to connect to. That trip involves a five minute bus ride from the airport to Lamezia Terme Centrale and then trains to Crotone (one change at Catanzaro Lido). NOTE that the two trains will usually be Regionale trains so you MUST validate your tickets prior to boarding, or risk hefty fines which will be collected on the spot.

Thanks for the info. Your responses are most helpful. Fortunately this trip to Crotone will not be right after an international flight but after spending a few days in Rome. Probably will fly to Lamezia then train to Crotone.

Alice,

Thanks for the clarification on your travel plans. As you'll be in Rome for a few days prior to your trip to Crotone, train travel is still a possibility. That will probably be a bit faster than a flight when all is considered, probably cheaper and most definitely more relaxing and pleasant than the usual airport "dog & pony show".

If you'd like to try the more relaxing and scenic travel method, a few options you could consider.....

  1. Stop for one night at an intermediate location to break the trip up into two shorter segments. Two possibilities would be Salerno or Lamezia Terme. On the current schedules, there's a direct Freccia train departing Roma Termini at 08:53, arriving Lamezia Terme Centrale at 12:36 (time 3H:43M). That will most definitely be faster and easier than a flight, and probably cheaper too.
  2. Use the shortest train solution and go directly to Crotone. If you use the same departure mentioned in Option 1, you could be in Crotone at 14:32 (travel time 5H:39M, 2 changes). The middle segment is by bus but that portion is only 54 minutes. That will still likely be faster than using a flight to Lamezia Terme and then train to Crotone.
