What is the best way to get from Pisa to Sorrento?

I am traveling with a teenager and elderly parents. We are flying into Pisa and plan on spending the majority of our time in the Sorrento area. I am not sure whether to rent a car or take the train(s)/bus. Thanks, Jackie

If you're planning to spend the night in Pisa and enjoy early morning departures, there is a DIRECT intercity (IC) train from Pisa Centrale at 6:49 which gets into Naples Centrale at 12:36 (where you can connect to the underground Circumvesuviana commuter rail to Sorrento). This IC train will avoid having to make a second connection in Rome, and will cost less as well (39.50 Euros in second class and 54 Euros in first class), which is very reasonable). Otherwise, later-departing trains will require a connection in Rome.

Two years ago we did that exact reverse route as our daughter was flying home early out of Pisa. Worked well except we always travel second class but this time the second class was really basic. We were crammed in a table for four with a nice stranger and a long noisy train ride Naples to Pisa with hard seats and watching the luggage. May be worth the splurge to go first class. Tricky part will be getting your parents and luggage down the stairs at the Naples station and connecting onto the funky Circumvesuviana train. Elderly travellers are more open to pickpockets so you may want to discourage them from carrying many valuables. I'd almost be tempted to arrange a taxi on arrival in Naples. We've used Rick's recommended driver Carmello Monetti who drives slows and is very gregarious, as we had a very early flight from Naples and were sleeping in Sorrento on the previous trip. For a group of four it isn't as bad of value. We love Sorrento.
