I see that Rick Steve’s recommends trenitia and I came across italianrail.com - are they same - just English versus Italian?
The official sites of the two biggest train companies in Italy are:
Trenitalia - the state run train company:
https://www.trenitalia.com/en.html (English language version of Italian site. Uses Italian place names eg Roma)
.Italo - the private fast train between big cities company:
https://italospa.italotreno.it/en/index.html
Trenitalia integrates with smaller train areas (like Trenord for Lake Como trains) seamlessly so it is easy to use.
Both have apps that can be very helpful.
As far as I know all other sites are re-sellers or consolidation sites. These sites can be fine for checking schedules but the tickets would ultimately come from these places so I just use those sites.
Hope that helps,

The PP is correct. Italiarail is just a 3rd party reseller, like trainline and many others. They may or may not display all of the options that are vailable on the official train line websites. I have always bought tickets directly from the trenitalia website or (for regional trains) at the station.
