I was planning to go to Lucca in mid -April to mid-May. However, if I book the trip for March l will save $1400. The airplane ticket is about $400 less. I will also pay about $1,000 less for the rental. The savings is important. However, the weather is also an important factor in my decision. Should I go in March or May?Thanks.

March is very chancy, IMO. It can be quite chilly. May is safer as far as weather.

I have been there in late March (last week) through first week in April. Weather was great. I like traveling in March/April better because there are fewer tourists. And I love Lucca. One of my favorite cities.

As Laurel said, the weather is far chancier in March/April. You coming out of winter, can be much cooler, and rainier. That is the average pattern. You could get lucky and have dry and hot week. We spent a week in mid-May in that area a couple of years and it was cool to colder every night, days were pleasantly warm but not overly warm, and it rained everyday from a light quick shower to one afternoon when it just drizzled all afternoon. But we were prepared with waterproof shoes, rain jackets, and long underwear and had a great time.
Our preferred time to travel is mid Sep through Oct.

We were there in May 2015 and it was hot. I guess it depends on what type of weather you are ok with.
