Could anyone please let me know what are some good and moderately priced guide books for Pompeii and Herculaneum?
My partner and I are big history buffs but will not be joining a tour group but doing it ourselves. We leave in 4 weeks.

I agree with Donna. You don't need to be part of a tour group but do hire a guide to tour Pompeii. There are always guides for hire at the gate, they'll give you a 2 hour overview and then you still have plenty of time to explore on your own with a guide book purchased right there.

You can pick up some good guide books onsite. I would strongly suggest taking a guided tour of those sites as they are huge and it's very easy to get lost, especially in Pompeii. Donna
