I am traveling to Italy with my family in June. While we are there, there's a holiday in Florence, June 24(San Giovanni Day) and Rome, June 29(St Peter & Paul). Is there going to be sights/restaurants/stores open? I tried to purchase Colosseum tickets to skip the line and they weren't available. I am not sure what that means for us in both cities. We are only in each city for a few days, it will be a shame to miss out on some things. Has anyone ever been in Italy on a holiday? Thanks
These are religious holidays, so most places will be open. Churches may have shorter hours for visitors if they add extra masses. Be sure to stay up late enough for fireworks (at least in Firenze).
I cannot say anything about Rome on a holiday. I was in Florence on San Giovanni Day in 2013. Loved it! Museums are open but check for special hours. If possible, try to spend some time outdoors on that day and see the sights! Saw some of the parade, watched a little calcio on a TV at a local cafe, just enjoyed the atmosphere. I am not sure if this still exists, but in 2013 there was a special promotion called Terrazze con Viste where certain hotels allowed people to visit their terraces for free without being a guest. We made it to the terrace of one such hotel to see the fireworks night on San Giovanni Day and it was awesome!! Enjoy!
