what if you don't know where you want to drop off a car?

I'm trying to decide how to handle a rental car situation. My husband and I have never driven in Italy and I'm a bit nervous about city traffic. I'm fine with the country or highway. We are planning on renting a car in Florence and touring the hill country but have to be in Venice 4 days later. I don't know where I want to "give it up" and return the car and get on the train to take us into venice. I'd like to enjoy the trip in and not we all wired and worried about the traffic and road signs closer to the cities. Advice? Do I have to know my pick up and drop of spot and time now....or is it possible to rent a car and drop off at will....knowing there's a fee for it.

You can drop a car anyplace you want. You probably won't get a rebate on the rental period if you drop it early. You probably won't get an extra charge for changing the drop point. All this assumes you'll not change countries unexpectedly.

cathy, Are you aware of the usual "issues" regarding driving in Italy (especially in Florence)? If not, post another note for further information.

I would definitely not drive in Florence. I would recommend picking up your car somewhere outside of Florence. For instance, if you plan to visit Siena, pick up your car in Siena for your time in Tuscany visiting the hill towns. I would drop the car off at Piazzale Roma in Venice and from there you can take a vaporetto to your hotel. If you're really wanting to rent & drop off at will, I would contact AutoEurope & ask if this is feasible/possible.

Just drop the car in Venice. Unlike other cities, Venice has only one road and it goes directly to the Piazzale Roma where the rental car offices are.
