I am taking the 9-Day Heart of Italy Tour and after that tour I would like to tag on a 3-day trip to Venice.
What comfortable, CHEAP pension near the major sites would people recommend?
I am a single male, traveling alone and don't need anything fancy-- just the basics.
I guess the question for the forum is:
Is there "cheap, comfortable" lodging "near the major sites" in Venice?
Cheap in Venice? It can be done. I found a place for 30 euros a night for this November near the Rialto bridge. And it's not a hostel! I bet they charge way more during high season, though. You didn't say when you are planning to be there.
The best way to find cheap accommodations is to go to a site like booking.com, put in your travel dates, put in your budget restriction, then see what pops up. Airbnb.com is another great site to find cheap rooms.
You might have a look at Albergo Doni which is likely about as cheap and basic as you'll find in Venice. If you want something really cheap, you could also look at a Hostel.
Thanks everyone for your response. This was very helpful and I will follow up on these ideas. By the way, I'm traveling in the first two weeks in September
I am seeing on Cross-pollinate.com, several places some with shared bath for 95 euros with vacancies in September in Venice proper. I recommend this website--more pensiones than hotels. There are a few less expensive places on Lido (an adjacent island) and one in Mestre.
Don't stay on the Lido or in Mestre if you can at all avoid it. Penny-wise and pound-foolish.
Suggest Hotel Doni where I paid about €90 for a single en suite room last fall. Their rooms with shared baths are less expensive, but those shared bathrooms are fairly old. I also saw people from the third floor having to come down to the second floor to find one. I've stayed there on a couple of trips, and it's one place where I would only book en suite.
Alternatively, 2 years ago I stayed at the convent of the sisters of the catecumeni for €50 with a shared bath. It is right near the Salute stop. Sorry, I don't have their email, but I believe you could book them through Monasterystays.com with a small surcharge.
Some of Rick's cheapest non-dorm listings are near the train station, on p. 133 or your Italy book, 60 euros for a single room with shared bath, or see a couple closer to the sights on p. 123.
