We plan to stay in Varenna for 3 days this October and want to here from anyone who has some favorite sights and resturants on Lake Como. All suggestions are welcome. Is crossing over the border to Switzerland worth the time?

Many travelers don't find driving around the Lake Como area to be the best decision for them: surprisingly (to some) the views from the roads aren't that great (the postcard views are to be had out on the mid-lake area between Varenna, Bellagio, and Menaggio), parking is difficult and expensive, the driver has to focus obsessively on the road in front of her/him and consequently doesn't see what views there are, etc.
So, it may be that your most enjoyable way to get into Switzerland is:
take the ferry from Varenna to Menaggio
take the bus from Menaggio to Lugano
and then reverse that route to return to Varenna
