What are the breakfasts like on the Rick Steves Italy tour?

I was just wondering what the breakfasts are like on the 10 day Rick Steves Venice, Florence and Rome tour. Thanks! Ruth

The breakfast featured various pastry, usually a ion of two or three juices, yogurt, perhaps boiled eggs but not eggs cooked to order, and yes, a coffee machine to customize your
coffee choice. Various fruits were also offered.

It's really a matter of what each hotel provides. Generally we had some type of pastry choice, often yogurt and cheese as well. All of the hotel breakfasts had amazing cappuccino. I remember one having eggs even, which surprised me a bit in Italy. I am a big breakfast eatter and always found plenty to fill up on before the tour. It may not be exactly what you are used to but there will be plenty.

I agree with what Joy said. In addition, there was sliced meats, such as ham and prosciutto. There was always an abundance of fruit. It was not uncommon to see dried cereal as well. Croissants were usually among the pastries, served alongside honey and nutella. It was more generous that the typical American continental breakfast. And I found the yogurt in Europe to be much more creamy and decadent.

Thanks, Amy and Joy. Sounds better than Continental breakfasts I have experienced in the U.S. Sounds yummy! Ruth

Ruth, Generally speaking, the breakfast will vary a bit according to the Hotel and location. Some Hotels provide a fairly substantial breakfast with "frills" such as scrambled eggs, while others are more basic. As the others have mentioned, in Italy there's usually some sliced Prosciutto or other meat, sliced Cheese, Yogurt, Orange Juice, Coffee or Tea, sometimes a couple of types of cereal, bread (toaster usually provided), possibly hard boiled Eggs, Buns and sometimes Croissants. While the breakfasts are a bit different than I'm used to, I'm always able to have a substantial meal to start the day. Some Hotels are completely "self serve", while others have guests serve their own food with a Waiter serving coffee and juice. Some Hotels provide Coffee (always freshly made) in a small Pot, which holds about two cups. Although I haven't taken that particular tour, I've often been in the same Hotels with Rick's tours (which was again the case last fall), so I also have the same breakfast. I'm sure you'll have a fantastic time on the tour! If you have time on Jan. 14th, you could always take a short drive to Edmonds and attend the presentation for that tour and speak with the Guides (it's free but registration requested). Rick's tour staff will also be there to answer any questions. Happy travels!

I'll second Ken's recommendation that you head on up to Edmonds on Sat. Jan 14 for a big RS reunion show that includes lots of information and talks for folks who have never taken a RS tour or never even been to Europe. And, most of the stuff in his travel store will be on sale. If you can not make it up there on the 14th, go up some other day, weekday if possible

I took this tour in 2010 with my daughter. You will have a great time. Just be sure to not go from mid June through mid Sept. unless you don't mind hot weather and crowds. I agree with the others that the breakfast depends on the hotel, that it tends to be continental 'plus' breakfast. Also, in many of the hotels Rick's tours use they also offer cappucino in the morning. That was always the best way to start my day.
