The RS book is just great. For another and slightly smaller book packed with things to see and do with pictures is the Eyewitness Top 10 book for Venice. It lists the top 10 of tons of things. Plus the back cover folds out to show a complete map of the vaporetto runs. Great guide.
Our favorites were St. Marks, the Doge's Palace (get the audio), the Peggy Guggenheim museum and the walk from the clock tower in St. Mark's square to the Rialto Bridge. Absolutely the best window shopping in Italy. Several gelato shops along the way.
Patrick, I see that you have started a few of these threads. In the trip planning section of this website, Rick has outlined 1,2, and more day itineraries for major cities. I'm using that as a guide for my planning.
