what are good day trips from Rome that won't leave you exhausted?

We will be in Rome for five nights in late November.
We were originally going to split the time as follows: Fly into Rome - arrive on Monday - tour Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and then drive to Tuscany to one of the cute little towns for Thursday and Friday nights, and then drive to Cvittechia (sp?) for a transatlantic cruise back to the US on Saturday. After talking to many people, they thought that was too aggressive and we would be worn out. So we now think we will stay in Rome the entire time, but venture out for a day or possibly two on day trips. We have looked at the Johnny Madge day trip and that looks fun - what else would be recommended. Something that can be done in a leisurely day and early evening without spending the night. (We stop in Florence on the cruise). We love countryside, wine, olive oils, farms, etc. (Guess we love the country - if it was a time for beautiful weather I would spend all my time in Tuscany). Any recommendations for day trips that aren't too far away. We want to take the train or have a tour/driver take us. We do not feel comfortable driving. Thanks!

Go here to Ron in Rome's excellent website and scroll all the way to the bottom to find everything you could want/need to know about daytrips out of Rome. He covers Ostia Antica, Orvieto, Tivoli, Hadrian's Villa and more. Of those, Ostia Antica and Orvieto are by far the easiest. And beautiful. If you're interested here are photos from our trip to Ostia Antica in May 2008 and Orvieto in May 2011.

Our favorite day trips from Rome include these: Ostia Antica, arrive by 10 am, home by 4 pm Pompeii by train. Depart at 9 am, return to Termini station by 7 pm
Tivoli by car and driver to see Hadrian's Villa and Viila D'Este. 9 am until 6 pm. What fun!
