We're flying into Rome for three days, going to Florence for three days, and would like to visit CT for a couple of days before going on to Venice. I was curious if there was anyplace worth visiting for a night between CT and Venice, as I hate train rides longer thant about 3 hours.
You will likely go back thru Florence,( to get the hi speed train) so overnight there
Regards
There used to be a great 7:50am run from La Spezia to Venice with a train change in Bologna. That run no longer appears on the Trenitalia website. Most runs will now route you via Pisa and Florence to get to Venice. However, you can input La Spezia Centrale and Bologna and you can see the 6:13, 8:16 and 12:36 departures that route you via Parma. Fare is 16:86Euro. But, you will still see most of the runs routing via Pisa and Florence. The distance is longer for these runs but a few minutes faster overall as you will be on a high-speed or two. But, the fare will be 45.10Euro as the two high-speeds are much more expensive to ride. After all of the above, Bologna is a very nice choice for an 1-nighter on the way to Venice. Nice places to stay near the train station and good high-speed runs to Venice the next morning. Great food in Bologna. For the Bologna/Venice journey, you again have choices. The high-speed at 30Euro (90 minutes) or the Regionale Veloce train at 10.75E (1hr 50min). The high-speed Eurostar Italia is nicer but you do have choices.
Hi BJ. If you would like to visit those four places, the logical order to avoid backtracking would be Rome, CT, Florence, Venice. Enjoy your trip!
You could also route yourself through Milano, or visit Verona or Padova on the way to Venice. Padova is also easy to do as a daytrip from Venice.
Milan is a pretty good mid way point with some good things to see including The Last Supper, Duomo, and the Castle. You can see those things in one day. Of course lots of shopping. I also loved Padua. We went there to see the Giotto Fresco. It was magnificient. We got there a few hours early and got a chance to walk through the city a bit and loved it.
Torino is a few hours from CT. If you've visited the other places, you might spend a night there. Beware, Torino (Turin) has two train stations, so be sure you know which is which. On trips to Paris from CT I passed thru Torino and had to cross town to the other train station to catch my connecting train. Milano is about 3 hours from Venice, so that might be your best choice.
